Brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) is a peptide hormone with natriuretic, vasodilatory and renin inhibitory properties (1, 2, 3). BNP belongs to a family of structurally similar peptide hormones that also includes atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP) and urodilatin. These peptides are characterized by a 17 amino acid ring structure with a disulfide bond between two cystein residues. The ring structure shows a high identity level between different natriuretic peptides (11 out of 17 amino acid residues are identical for all group representatives). BNP molecule is composed of 32 amino acid residues (a.a.r.) with a disulfide bond located between the residues Cys10 and Cys26 (Fig. 1). Clinical and Research Area Cardiac Markers
